When Xavion’s mother needed full-time care, he stepped in without hesitation. Like so many family caregivers, he faced long days, emotional stress, and the challenge of finding the right resources to support them both. Through United Way and AARP’s Caregiver Support Program, Xavion found the tools, guidance, and community he needed — joining more than 1.8 million caregivers who have been connected to critical services through this partnership. Every year, 8 million tons of plastic pollution escapes into the world's oceans, and the United States alone burns or buries 32 million tons of plastic in landfills. Nearly every piece of plastic begins as a fossil fuel and greenhouse gases are emitted at nearly every stage of the plastic lifecycle. This cost of plastic pollution to human health is enormous, especially in Black, Brown, Indigenous, and low-income communities where the majority of plastic-making facilities and plastic-burning incinerators are located. It’s tough being a baby sea turtle. Less than 1 in 1,000 hatchlings survive to adulthood! In their first minutes on the beach birds, crabs, raccoons, and foxes prey on these little critters. Then in the water, seabirds and fish will continue to snatch them up. And that is just natural predators. We need to give baby sea turtles the best shot at flourishing. With a global network of ocean sanctuaries, we can protect turtles and all critters in the ocean. I served as producer and editor.
